This is a good story wrapped round the building of the Bell Rock lighthouse, which lies in the Firth of Forth, the same water in which lies Leith, the port for Edinburgh. The architect in charge was Robert Stevenson, who was the father of the renowned writer, R.L. Stevenson.
The book is not a very long one, and it came originally with four plates in colour.
The Bell Rock had taken many a life, so it was important to construct a good sound permanent lighthouse there.
First published in 1865.
